Sterilisation of discharge
from wastewater treatment plants*
with the option of deactivating active substances
(oestrogen etc.)
* European patent applied, not tested and not granted yet
General Information:
The UNO
has declared the year of 2003 the International Year of Water.
According to UNO forecasts, by the year 2025 two out of three people in
the world will suffer from water scarcity. Europe will share the same
fate and is
acknowledging the extent of this development. Therefore, Europe as well
has to take immediate action since the glaciers, being a precious reserve
for potable water, have been diminishing at a rapid pace over the past
few years due to the worldwide greenhouse effect. In the next years, this
stress on existing supplies of water will increase. The access to this
precious and crucial resource will become more aggravated due to the worldwide
increase of population, potentially to a point where this famine will
threaten all of mankind. already to have today approx. 1,2 billion people
no entrance to drinking water. According to the calculations of experts
and considering the fact that in the next few years 3 billion more people
will be living on this planet, the supply of the developing countries
with drinking water would have to be financed with approximately 20 billion
Euros (~ 72 billion AED). As a matter of fact, just about half of this
amount is currently invested in securing water supplies in developing
countries.
Development:
Innovation
in wastewater hygienisation of biological sewage treatment plants at most
competitive prices without additional floor space required and without
additional building measures.
Inlet and
outlet system for circular sedimentation tanks with integrates ultraviolet
light devices to degerminate and inactivate remaining unfavourable agents
i.e. estrogens, antibiotics, etc. The installation of this device is located
at both sides right before the outlet launder assembly of the plant. This
system will be applied to the sewage treatment plant at Wallduern / Germany
(Federal State of Baden-Wuerttemberg). The purified water can be used
for either washing and cleaning purposes or in agricultural irrigation
with absolutely no negative effects for human consumption of the produce.
Schematic presentation
of an ultraviolet light appliance to degerminate and inactivate unfavourable
agents such as estrogens.
The presentation shows the outlet system of a circular stainless steel
launder assembly - make Herwig - with integrated ultraviolet
light appliances for degermination. The installation of this device is
located at both sides right before the outlet launder assembly of the
plant (as can be seen as the blue lit windows). In the original launder
assembly, the ultraviolet light devices are mounted crosswise to the groove
and reach to the edge of it in order to avoid any water passing by without
being ray-treated. Thus, a complete and thorough degermination and hygienisation
of the water is guaranteed.
The purified water can be used for either washing and cleaning purposes
or in agricultural irrigation with absolutely no negative effects for
human consumption of the produce.
